Science or Scienceism?
You Choose!
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, science is The investigation of natural phenomena through observation, theoretical explanation, and experimentation, or the knowledge produced by such investigation. Science makes use of the scientific method, which includes the careful observation of natural phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis, the conducting of one or more experiments to test the hypothesis, and the drawing of a conclusion that confirms or modifies the hypothesis.
Although not part of the definition, science operates through a set of assumptions. One of those assumptions is that the laws of the universe do not change. Another assumption is that physcial reality is independent of consciousness. And yet another assumption is that any two systems that are identical in parameter will always behave the same way. A final assumption is that there are no things by their very nature which are unknowable. In other words, the magical and the supernatural do not exist. Together, these assumptions form a philosphy of nature that is decisively materialistic.
